The huemul weights approximately 45 to 65 kilograms (100 - 140
pounds). They live in greater heights in the summer, then come
down the mountains and spend the winter in the wooded valleys.
The areas with fresh water are their favorites. This red deer
mainly feeds on herbaceous plants and shrubs.
Originally, they lived on the Andes between 34ºS in Chile and
40ºS in Argentina to the Patagonia (Povilitis
1983). At the beginning 1970’s they were seen in the most place
of the Patagonia. They were seen too in Aysen, which figures
were minus than Argentina. In 1997 the population was decrease.
